QOTD from the “you have got to be kidding me” department…

From America’s Plan Executive Summary, Federal Communications Commision, National Broadband Plan, March 2010.

Broadband is the great infrastructure challenge of the early 21st century.
Like electricity a century ago, broadband is a foundation for economic growth, job creation, global competitiveness and a better way of life.

Broadband will not reverse the US Economic Crisis. Bailouts administered by the bankrupt institutions the bailouts were to save will not reverse the US Economic Crisis. Outsourcing even more Government services to companies legislated to generate revenue for their shareholders will not reverse the US Economic Crisis.

Perhaps the way the US looks at the rest of the world and the way American Institutions function should be looked at to resolve the current problems with the American Economy.

Exec Summary Broadband plan.

New Proposed DST change rules

OK, this is BS. Why, WHY are we wasting our extra and short hours in the middle of the f’ing night?

I propose these new simple rules:

  • First Friday of March at 3:15pm we spring forward one hour thus shortening our work day on that Friday.
  • First Friday of November Fall back one hour at 7:00pm thus giving us an extra hour on Friday evening to play or to just go to bed early and catch up on sleep.

With these new rules it will help with the, I’m so f’ing tired this morning I can’t function on that Monday after spring forward. Likely I won’t be able to function properly until at least Wednesday evening.. If I get enough coffee.

Does something smell off to you?

On my way to work in the mornings, when I drive the car (which is almost always anymore), I listen to either 660 for news or CBC 1010.

This morning it was the CBC. So here they are, members of the news media, with other members of the news media and some bloke from the 3rd largest news media company in the US saying, (I’m paraphrasing here)

There’s all these great news sites on the internet but so much of it is user published news. How can you trust that?

Like I’m going to trust you more for saying something like that? Just because it doesn’t come from a large media company does not mean it isn’t trust worthy. Of course, you need to do some back ground checking and at least know a bit about who it is you are reading. Would you take the word of some joe that walked you to you on the street and said, “The sky is falling!”? Likely not that either.

This all smells like so much garbage, large media trying to spin another story.

I will continue to listen to the CBC, but as time goes on it seems like I’m getting more and more pessimistic as to who is telling the truth and when. I think blindly following the word of any news site is generally a bad idea: large media outlet or not. For the real deal, visit someone who doesn’t have a profit margin to protect.

Misc. noteworthy bits and bobs.

DST happened, earlier than it did before. I really hope it saves money on energy and doesn’t just end up getting reverted and causing us a ton more pain. We’ll have to see.

It was warm over the weekend. +16C or something yesterday, and almost all the snow is gone. Really nice out. Last night it rained, March 12th and it rained not snowed. That in itself is note worthy.

jhb and little J get home on Wedensday, in the early afternoon. I miss them so much. I bought jhb a book (I guess for me too), and a book for little J, and a magazine for jhb

I cleaned the house this past weekend, upgraded and repaired the PVR (long standing technical broken part issue), upgraded jhb’s machine and made GL work properly.

I also tried out secondlife for the first time (omg, another social networking disaster that will end up not scaling and wasting peoples lives). I have to say it has potential though… maybe, but at this point it is pretty well completely useless and a time sink. I’ll play a bit more with it before I decide for sure and report back.

So, I’m using fitday.com to track my food/activity daily and it has a link into it for the public… Don’t know how much anyone cares but here it is.

Decline of the English Language

Not that I’m perfect, because as anyone who knows me I’m not. I can’t spell and sometimes have problems with usage, but I try which is more than I can say for a lot of people out there.

I saw this and thought, not only do I have to finish reading the essay but also it hits the nail on the head. Thanks to gbWrk in IRC for posting it in relation to disingenuous vs. disingenious.

We fill the universities with people who have no business being there. We then accept their values. The country has embraced almost lasciviously a radical egalitarianism whose pretences can be maintained only by dragging all to the level of the lowest. Television bathes us all in the moral and cultural drains from which there is no escape.

Is it spring yet?

So, a lot of things have been happening.

After arriving home on the 14th, we’ve been busy just around here. jhm is settled, for the most part and the weather has been so nice that last weekend we dug flower beds and worked on the back yard, and this coming weekend will be more of the same.
